Bring your dog to the lawn under the verandah at 12pm to enter. Don’t have a dog? Come and help out with the judging!
And for the snappers and shooters among us, the Photography Competition. Categories are:
- Landscape or Nature
Bring your photos to the Hall foyer at 10am. There will also be a “Guess Where This Is” photo competition. Test your visual memory!
And the Quaama Quisine May Fair Menu: Pumpkin Soup, Bacon and Lentil Soup, Minestrone Soup, Homemade Bread, Beef Lasagne, Veggie Lasagne, Salad, Various Cakes. Yum.

Quaama MayFair, Saturday 2 May – a celebration of autumn. And dogs!
Preparations are under way for our autumn fair and it’s to be a MayFair, but in a southern hemispheric, Quaamesey way – a celebration of autumn. And dogs!
There’ll be market stalls, music, verandah talks and a maypole for the kids. Competitions – Cooking with Apples, Cooking with Herbs, Oatcakes and the ever-popular Preserves. And a Decorated Hat/Garland Competition. And photo competitions too – one competition for photographers and one for the rest of us, of the “Where Is This???” variety where you must identify a local landmark. Prizes all around!
And here’s a first for Quaama, and you may well ask why no-one thought of it before in a town so full of furry friends… a Dog Show! With prizes too. Quaama’s canine mascot Quigley is yet to decide on the categories but Waggiest Tail will be among them, you can count on it!

As usual the Progress Association will be serving tasty Quaama Quisine – lunches, snacks, tea and coffee – from the kitchen. And the regular Trading Table will be available if you have stuff to sell but not enough for a stall of your own.

Saturday 20 April… rain, icy temperatures, wind gusts… what a day for the Harvest Fair! But people starting pouring in with entries for the Cooking Competition at 9am, and at about 12pm, with the judging in full flight, the sun broke through and the River Cottage cameras came out. At about 2pm with all the winners announced and applauded and filmed, the clouds closed over again.
So, on a day where we could happily have held the Fireside Fair, there were record crowds and record numbers of entries for the Cooking Competition – and record funds raised for the community.
The fifty entries in the Cooking Competition were poked, prodded, sniffed, stirred and tasted by Quaama’s own Geoffrey Grigg and Kel Gillies, ably assisted by Laura the scribe. Both categories (Preserves and Pumpkin Dishes) had to be split into Sweet and Savoury subcategories, there were so many entries. And the winners were (with judges’ comments)…
Judges’ choice winners: Pumpkin dish sweet – Bhagya for her Pumpkin Cheesecake (cooked perfectly, perfect texture, perfect flavour), Pumpkin dish savoury – Linda McMurray’s Pumpkin, Leek and Goat’s Cheese Tart (the thyme worked well to give the pumpkin character and the leeks were cooked just right).
Seasonal Preserve sweet – Janet Menefy’s Plum Jelly (‘like eating a ripe plum on a summer’s day’). Seasonal Preserve savoury – Barbara McGinnity for her Apple and Tomato Chutney (packed full of flavour). Highly Commended: Pumpkin dish sweet – Veronica Abbott’s Pumpkin and Lime Cakes (moist, clean with good balance of flavours) and Pumpkin dish savoury – Jay Sinclair’s Pumpkin and Sweet Potato Salad (packed with flavour).
Those were the Judges’ choices. As for the People’s Choices: Popular vote: Pumpkin dish – 1st Vicki Younger’s Pumpkin Loaf with 16 votes, 2nd Hallie Fernandez with 14 votes for her pumpkin Cheesecake. Seasonal preserves was a five-way tie between Betsy Hilton, Janet Menefy, Maree Copping, Bhagya and Barbara McGinnity.
Crazy Vegetable Competition – the Best Dressed Vegetable was won by Baylee and Most Life-Like by Barbara McGinnity.
Approximately $1200 was raised by the various community groups represented. Quaama Progress Association would like to thank the Lions Club for the BBQ (they sold out of snags on the day) and all the stallholders who attended despite the weather. Extra special thanks to the locals who got up early to put up extra marquees, and to everyone who turned out in the weather to make a crowd on the day.
We managed to dodge a nasty-looking weather forecast for the Fireside Fair, instead getting a classic, crisp, mostly sunny winter’s day, perfect. Quaama Quisine in the supper room was doing a roaring trade in soups, stews and wholesome bakes, and Bhagya told me she’d signed up 14 new members for the Quaama Progress Association. When I arrived Catherine McEwan was jujing up a model in hats and coats and various other items of apparel and bling for the appreciative onlookers. Jujing, I said. No, it’s new to me too, but that’s what it sounded like. Ask her, maybe I got the spelling wrong. Maybe it’s zsuzsing, à la Zsa Zsa Gabor?
After lunch I managed to catch Dave Hooper and the Bad Examples on the verandah stage. The Bad Examples are Peter Honer on keyboards, Rob Connal on cello, Al Holly on guitar – was it a 12-string? – and of course Dave plays drums and various stringed things. They sound great. A bit jazzy, a bit moogie, some classic covers and some very smooth original numbers. They got a few people dancing too.
There were 30 entries in the Cooking Comp and the winners (Judge’s Choice) were Caroline Long for her Lemon Cordial (Citrus Preserves category) and Kym Sinclair for his Roast Vegetables with Cous Cous (Campfire Cooking). Highly commended were Bayley for his Lemon Butter and Kara Coen for her Orange Lemon Toffee Cakes. The People agreed with Judge Kel about Caroline’s cordial, with Annette Heyhorn’s Orange Butter the runner up in the popular vote, but respectfully demurred about the Campfire Cooking, voting for Letitia Carroll’s Hot Pumpkin Pot as the popular choice with Kym once again awarded runner up, this time for his Roast Lamb.
In the Beanie Competition winners decided by popular vote were (Wildest) Cathy Blake for her much desired felted creation and runner up Catherine McEwan’s attention grabbing tam o’ shanter, and Most Loved was Bayley’s colourful creation, one that he made himself. Runner up was Barbara McGinity.
Kids’ corner was very popular with a number of beautiful yarn weavings now adorning the “Fireside Tree” – special thanks to Rebecca for keeping the kids occupied for almost the whole day.
The QPA raised over $700 which covers fair costs and leaves a substantial amount to be returned to community projects. Thanks go to the Cobargo Pre-School for hosting the BBQ, all the performers, presenters and stallholders, the untiring members of the QPA and to all the members of the community near and far who helped in the kitchen, with setting up, clearing up and coming along. Can’t be done without community help.
